A new look for buffered bike lanes in Long Beach is confusing some of the residents.

Tim Grobaty reports on the local outcry over the "the green things on Studebaker"—i.e., bright green bollards recently installed on Studebaker Road between Wardlow Road and Spring Street as a buffer between a bike lane and vehicle traffic on the street.

Grobaty describes the complaints, found mostly on Nextdoor sites for neighborhoods in Long Beach's Far East, as the " beef du jour," finding residents expressing confusion about the purpose of the bollards and using terms like "eyesore."

Grobaty notes that green bollards have already been installed on the north side of town, on Artesia Boulevard between Atlantic and Orange avenues. "Neither site was chosen for any particular peril to cyclists," explains Grobaty. "Rather, they’re the first two streets to be covered in the Complete Streets program."

As a fig leaf, Grobaty concludes the article with a playlist of songs about "green things." Our personal favorite from the list is a tie between "Green Onions," by Booker T & the MGs, and "Green-Eyed Lady," by Sugarloaf.
