The city's public works department hopes the app will improve efficiency, sustainability, and customer service.

In a six-month pilot program, the city of Atlanta will outfit its garbage collection fleet with an app from local tech company Rubicon Global.
Rubicon's mobile app for haulers ... will be deployed across Atlanta's Department of Public Works fleet, which services 96,000 households within city limits. On the back end, public works staff will be able to track the haulers' routes and field service issues from citizens using Rubicon's vendor software.
Officials hope that the app’s route-optimization software will help the fleet run more efficiently, cutting costs and contributing to climate-change policy goals. The pilot is part of the Power To Change initiative, which measures citywide sustainability efforts.
More than 5,000 businesses use Rubicon's waste-hauling services, including national chains like 7-11, but Atlanta is the first public entity to do so.
