The Coalition to Free Chestnut Street met with the Mayor of Philadelphia persuading him to reconsider closing Chestnut Street, a major transit street, in front of Independence Hall as a post-9/11 security measure.
"Residents, business owners, and the tourism industry have been lobbying to reverse the city's decision (to close Chestnut Street). They contend that the closing has caused traffic headaches and loss of business and has made the area unsightly. After a one-hour meeting with members of a group opposed to closing Chestnut Street in front of Independence Hall, Mayor Street yesterday announced that he would reconsider the closing."
