This report, published by the Pew Oceans Commission, examines the role of fully protected marinereserves as an effective way to restore and maintain coastal and marinehabitats. With the dramatic rise of coastal sprawl, marine ecosystemsarecontinually under siege. This report offers three recommendations foraction: Create a network of reserves in all major U.S. marine habitats;develop a community-based coalition to monitor inside and outsideexistingreserves; and adopt comprehensive ocean-use policy planning thatintegrateslocal, state and national government input.
