As New Urbanism catches on in New Zealand, some experts worry about the popularity of exclusive, gated, walled, and segregated subdivisions developed to create a "sense of community."

New developments "played on people's romantic notions of the old values of community...but they also hinted at a darker side of residential segregation...where residents lived behind walls and were protected by guards...community-making could result in social exclusion and segregation of socioeconomic groups, rather than the desired diversity...The rhetoric of new urbanism was reflected in real estate material, which included words such as 'oasis', 'privacy', 'exclusivity' and 'island of seclusion'."
