A light rail extension that will reach South Phoenix took a crucial step forward last week.

"City planners said the Federal Transit Administration has granted a significant environmental approval for the planned South Central Light Rail Extension," reports Al Macias. "The approval means final design work on the extension can begin."
The hope is for the extension to be complete in 2023. When it's complete, the extension will add five miles of light rail service, from Downtown Phoenix and run south to Baseline Road.
Hat tip to Sandy Smith for sharing news of the FTA's decision. Smith's article also shares news about two international rail transit projects.
