Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels hopes new streetcar line will support new bio-tech campus
Seattle leaders and developers want to connect an area near Lake Union to downtown with a tram using the Portland Streetcar model of low-cost track construction that would be partially funded through a local improvement district. Seattle has hired members of the team that built the Portland streetcar. The city hopes a rail line will support new office development. "We think by linking the neighborhood via the streetcar to Westlake Center -- location for the bus tunnel, monorail and Sound Transit -- that we will greatly improve mobility for workers and for residents."
