"But there is another important cost to sprawl: It fosters a sedentary, auto-based lifestyle that is harmful to the health of both adults and children... One statistic tells as much about increased obesity among children as all the data about fast-food consumption. As recently as 1969, 69 percent of all children walked to school. The figure is now 10 percent, according to the Surface Transportation Policy Project, a Washington-based nonprofit advocacy group for transportation alternatives."
