"After tabling the matter for three years, the Texas Historical Commission in Austin voted Friday morning to designate the Astrodome a State Antiquities Landmark," reports Gabrielle Banks.

The dome, which is technically designated as the Harris County Domed Stadium, earned its historic status from the commission, as home to the Oilers and Astros for decades, hosting Muhammad Ali bouts, Elvis concerts, Evel Knievel stunts and the "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. It also gained national clout as a temporary shelter to New Orleans residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

The "first fully enclosed, domed sports stadium in the U.S." entered the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. In July 2015, Banks reported that a conservancy was under consideration to help save the Astrodome. No word in this week's article about whether than plan is still in effect.
