Children spend over an hour each day in cars. Travel habits of parents driving children adds to traffic congestion.
"Traffic experts have known for years that the trips parents take with their children have contributed to the increase in traffic... Without knowing how and where young children travel, researchers say they have been missing a piece of the traffic puzzle that could reveal solutions to congestion and explain the impact of auto-dependent life on U.S. children... Nationwide, young children averaged 65 minutes a day in cars... Researchers studying ways to combat traffic congestion say the survey results show it will be difficult to get many drivers to switch to mass transit unless bus and train systems cater more to parents. If such family staples as child-care centers and grocery stores aren't located near bus and train stops, they say, many parents -- accompanied by children -- will have little choice but to stick with driving."
