Big Idea: One Less Highway Through Kansas City

Eric Bunch argues that removing I-70 from downtown Kansas City presents a big opportunity for the city.

A more walkable grid in downtown Kansas City could be possible if a proposal to remove a section of I-70 comes to fruition. "If the complete removal of this section of I-70 proves to be feasible, the opportunities for catalytic, legacy projects abound," Eric Bunch argues in Bike Walk KC.

Other possibilities that Bunch suggests to take advantage of the opportunity presented by this change to the city's infrastructure include creating more walkable development and new trails for bikes. These ideas will all be on the table as the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) undertakes its "Beyond the Loop" study, kicked off earlier this month.
