From time to time, a new technology emerges that truly empowers citizens. In the case of urban planning, it is a new tool called Neighborhood Knowledge California (NKCA).
"NKCA enables citizens and professionals alike to perform remarkably powerful research and analysis at a neighborhood level using only a web browser. NKCA is a beautifully-designed and easy-to-use web-based mapping tool which provides demographic, housing and lending data at the census tract level throughout the state of California... What sets NKCA apart from other web-based mapping efforts are two tools called the "Data Uploader" and "Neighborhood Selector." A true innovation, the data upload tool enables any user to add their own set of data (in Microsoft Excel, Access, or delimited data formats) into NKCA's mapping system."
