Mixed use projects can revitalize a city, but not all cities see the light.
"When it comes to crafting a sense of community, I am afraid most new urbanists remain suburban separatists. One must keep in mind that the movement is dominated by architects for whom the look of things takes precedent over how things work, and for whom. If experience and history has taught us anything, it is that for communities to be viable they must be places where people not only can live, but also shop and play. There needs to be safe and engaging street life. With this in mind, and prompted by the need for housing, mixed use at long last is being pursued by most cities."
