From 1970 to 2000, the size of new homes increased by more than 50 percent. Formal living rooms have been replaced by more livable family rooms, kitchens have expanded and bathrooms have proliferated...Since 1940, the Census Bureau has collected detailed data on how Americans live. Some results from the 2000 census are still being tabulated, but what has already been released shows stark changes in the evolution of the American home."
