How New York's New 'Slow Turn Boxes' Work

Slow turn boxes, also known as neckdowns or curb extensions, have been popping up all over New York City as part of an ongoing pilot project.

Brad Aaron shares news of the latest work by Streetfilms, showing the New York Department of Transportation program to build neckdowns around the city.

"Last year DOT began installing ”slow turn boxes” — curb extensions made from flex-posts and paint — at intersections where turning motorists injure a lot of people walking," writes Aaron.

Shaye Weaver reported in December 2016 that the NYDOT's pilot program would roll out slow turn boxes at 100 crash-prone intersections in the city.
