Eviction Hot Spot: Chicago's South Shore

Rising rents and low income residents have made this South Side neighborhood a locus for evictions and forced moves.

"According to data obtained from the sheriff's office, no Cook County zip code has seen more evictions than South Shore, 60649, since the office began tracking these numbers in 2011," Maya Dukmasova writes for the Chicago Reader. That area has seen close to 400 evictions since 2011 when the CPD started keeping records of them. The neighborhood, which borders Lake Michigan has a disproportionate number of Chicagoans who spend 50% or more of their earnings on rent, according to a DePaul study.

One source of evictions has been the buildings owned and operated by Pangea Properties, who last year, "filed more than 1,000 eviction cases" Dukmasova reports. Pangea filed one eviction case for every eight of its properties, a high rate when compared to Pangea's competitors like Kass Management Services, which filed one eviction for every 25 units.
