Transit planners at the county of Miami-Dade in Florida are asking permission to reroute and discontinue bus routes from the county bus system.

"Miami-Dade’s bus system wants to trim stops and hire a private operator for some of its least-popular routes in a move to save millions of dollars during a rocky year for transit," according to an article by Douglas Hanks.
At the center of the story about reduced transit service is plummeting ridership numbers. "Ridership is down throughout Miami-Dade, with bus boardings off by nearly 10 percent for the year and Metrorail trailing 2016 results by 6 percent," report Hanks.
The county's Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) still must gain approval for the service reductions from the County Commission.
Meanwhile, Miami Mayor Carlos Gimenez is pushing for the so-called SMART plan, which proposes a $6 billion investment in six new rail lines.
