"The trade center redevelopment process has highlighted a widespread problem in the way architecture and urbanism are conceived and practiced in America. For the last few decades, our new buildings and public works have become ever less inspiring and ever less functional. There are many causes for this, including a nationwide patchwork of regulatory schemes that are in some instances overly permissive and in others excessively restrictive. At the root of the problem, however, are two mutually reinforcing factors: an almost total absence of demand for excellent architecture, and a flawed system of undergraduate and professional education that supplies our architects and planners.
