Buffalo Mayor Masiello argues that regional government is inevitable: Buffalo and Erie County will merge their governments within the next five to 10 years.
"The leader of New York's second-largest city acknowledged that he supports the merger call of County Executive Joel A. Giambra and others for regional government. While Masiello in the past described merger as 'a last resort,' this is the first time he has expressed support for the idea. A chronic lack of revenue makes merger the only alternative to the unacceptable higher taxes or drastically reduced services, he told The Buffalo News. 'A city-county merger is inevitable,' Masiello said. 'It's got to happen, economically, for the survival of this region. And for our image, it would pay huge dividends.'"
