Accessibility remains a hot-button issue for transportation network companies, and the city of New York is now moving forward with a proposal that would not intact the chosen policies if companies like Uber were deciding.

"New York City may require Uber to provide more service to people with disabilities," reports Dana Rubinstein. That is, the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission "is proposing a rule that would require all 'for-hire vehicle' companies to dispatch a quarter of all trips in wheelchair-accessible vehicles by 2021."
Rubinstein provides insight into the political debate on either side of the controversial issue. Uber, for instance, has advocated for city-funded incentives for drivers to provide wheelchair-accessible service, as detailed in an April article by Rubinstein.
