A power outage that began in North Carolina's Outer Banks on Thursday of last week is expected to continue for three to five more days. Mandatory evacuations have devastated the area during its peak tourism season.

The power outage struck last Thursday, and since then an "estimated 50,000 people were evacuated from Hatteras Island and another 10,000 from neighboring Ocracoke, leaving such tourist hot spots as Rodanthe, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras nearly desolate," writes Murgia .
The outage occurred when "construction crews working on the Bonner Bridge [accidentally drove] a steel casing into an underground power cable, cutting it completely..."
This morning, an article on WITN updated the story about the work to restore power: "Utilities now say power should be restored to two islands on the Outer Banks in three to five days."
