MIT is developing a collision-avoidance system for cars.
"Feron said he wants to 'kill the shockwave' of traffic that forces drivers to make sudden stops, which can cause chain-reaction accidents. He plans to use in-vehicle wireless communications technology, GPS and advanced traffic-flow models to build the system...The advance warning system would give drivers additional time to react before they see the brake lights immediately in front of them. Even a few cars equipped with such an indicator would allow those vehicles to slow down sooner, alerting other vehicles around them."
