"This is life all along the western edge of Southern California's fast-growing Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The urban-fringe area that was called the Orange Empire when citrus was king now calls itself the Inland Empire. Home to 3.5 million of California's 35 million people, the swath of valley, mountain and desert defines suburban sprawl and its woes: traffic snarls, crowded schools, vanishing vistas and a shortage of jobs for those who've moved here for the California dream of a family home they can afford... a study of 83 U.S. metropolitan areas by the Washington, D.C.-based Smart Growth America organization ranked the Inland Empire by far the most sprawling and least liveable."
