"Now the T wants to hike subway fares in January to $1.25, a 25 percent boost, and bus fares to $1, a 33 percent increase. That would be about triple the increase in the consumer price index since the last hike. Yet promised enhancements, such as a sensible subway-to-bus transfer policy, remain in the distance.Progress has been especially slow on a staple of big city subway systems, the automated fare collection system. A reusable ''smart card'' would open the way for ridership increases through peak and off-peak pricing, and allow the MBTA to devise a more equitable time-and-distance-based fare structure."
