Shanghai Slides Toward Sprawl

With skyrocketing property values and a population twice the size of New York, Shanghai is on the verge of becoming a sprawling mess.

"Shanghai dreams of becoming a world-class metropolis, but city planners might need to rethink their blueprint to ensure it doesn't just become an ugly urban sprawl, an executive of a global architecture firm said... City planners need to return to their drawing boards to provide more public space around the city and an efficient mass transportation system for its 16 million people -- twice as many as in New York City, Mr Choa said. 'Shanghai will have a crisis unless it can have its mass transportation development keep up with its urban development,' he warned."
