Miami-Dade Looking for Transit Funding Ideas

Officials in Miami-Dade County are moving quickly to potentially add a half-cent surtax to the November ballot.

"Another half-penny transportation tax may be on the November ballot as Miami-Dade scrambles to add transit," reports Gabi Maspons.

It's been 15 years since voters in Miami-Dade County approved the People's Transportation Plan (PTP) half-cent surtax. According to Maspons, much of the revenue generated by the PTP tax has been devoted to operations, rather than capital investment. For instance, from the $251.6 million generated in 2015-16, only $75.8 was spent on capital projects.

Local officials are calling for a new tax in response to a perceived desire from Millennials in the region for more public transit, according to sources cited in the article.
