New Task Force to Start Planning for Pittsburgh's Newest, Largest Park

A plan for a 660-acre park, originally put forward in 2016, now has institutional backing.

"A task force has formed to begin brainstorming how and to what extent the city will develop Hays Woods, a 660-acre site that would be the city’s largest park if kept intact," reports Diana Nelson Jones.

"The Urban Redevelopment Authority bought the property for $5 million and conveyed the land to the city last fall," adds Nelson Jones. The URA still has control of 89 acres of Hays Woods, but an initial proposal for a housing development on that section of the property has met opposition the public.

Nelson Jones has been reporting on the evolution of Hays Woods, back to 2016 when the previous owner of the property, Pittsburgh Development Group II, first moved to convey the land to the city.
