"Barry Wellar, a geography professor and urban planner, says Ottawa's future lies in abandoning suburban sprawl in favour of intense urban development...For decades, he says, city planners abandoned creativity and chose the path of least resistance: paving cheap agricultural land with rows of boring, unimaginative single-family homes to fulfil the suburban dream...it is critical that intensification be extended to suburban areas so that people who live there, but want to downgrade to apartments, condos, or garden homes, can do so without moving downtown."
