"The MARTA Board of Directors is expected to decide this week whether to drop the $1 fee for riding the Atlanta Streetcar," reports David Wickert.
In case you heard reports that the MARTA Board had already decided to make fares on the Atlanta Streetcar free, there was some confusion on Tuesday morning. "Earlier Tuesday, MARTA sent a press release announcing the fares would be free when the agency takes over streetcar operations on July 1," according to Wickert. "But it subsequently corrected its press release, saying the board must make that decision."
The regional transportation agency MARTA is now operating the city-owned streetcar. Rides on the streetcar were free until 2016, which is also when local officials began calls for MARTA to operate the system.
