The regional transit authority for metropolitan Vancouver is crediting high gas prices, growing employment, and system improvements for a new record in transit ridership.

Harrison Mooney reports from Vancouver: "Data for the month of May shows unexpected growth across all types of public transportation, with monthly boarding up nine per cent over May of 2016, TransLink said in a statement.'
The strong growth on ridership for the TransLink system was evident on train and bus lines, and in aggregate, the ridership figures set a new benchmark for the city. "According to the transit authority, ridership numbers have only been higher once before — during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, when Vancouver hosted the world," reports Mooney.
