Ohio State is trying to improve its neighborhood by transforming a 7.4-acre site into a mixed-use project intended both to attract shoppers and stimulate investment.
Later this year, Campus Partners for Community Urban Development, a nonprofit group created by the university and the city (but controlled by the university), hopes finally to begin building the $120 million project. To be called South Campus Gateway, it is expected to include five buildings with 250,000 square feet of retail space, 70,000 square feet of offices, 200 apartments and parking for 1,200 cars.Universities like Ohio State that coexist uneasily with low-income neighborhoods have two choices, said Terry D. Foegler, the president of Campus Partners. They can either wall themselves off from the community, or engage in 'enlightened self-interest.'"
