Ground was broken yesterday for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's biomedical research campus, a Viñoly-designed, $500 million center that will be built into a slope at the 281-acre site at Janelia Farm...Viñoly explained his fascination with designing spaces for cutting-edge scientific researchers, especially those working in genetic medicine...Institute planners sent a book describing their scientific needs to 20 of the world's best architects...Four firms were selected and given $50,000 each to come up with a design.
