More people are cycling in the city, and a Bike Mayor would help promote biking and encourage better, safer infrastructure.

Transportation activists in New York are petitioning for a Bike Mayor for the city to represent the interests of cyclists. "The concept of a specialized mayor isn’t something new in New York City, or beyond. In March 2018, the city named its first-ever 'Nightlife Mayor,' and cities like London, Copenhagen and Amsterdam all have Bike Mayors of their own," writes Kristen Toussaint.
A New York Bike Mayor would be the first for a major American city. The advocacy group Transportation Alternatives says that a designated biking representative is needed as more people cycle in the city, bike-sharing networks grow, and safety continues to be a concern.
The Amsterdam-based organization BYCS coordinates the Bicycle Mayor Program, a global initiative. Advocates in New York say a Bike Mayor could facilitate communication between city officials and cyclists, promote cycling, and work to make streets safer for bicyclists.
