Monitoring Traffic Conditions With Lamppoles

Researchers in the U.K. are proposing a plan to utilize streetlamp infrastructure to install traffic monitoring devices in an effort to collect more information and aid transportation planners.

The sensors could collect the ambient transportation information throughout cities and transmit it wirelessly for analysis, according to researchers at the University of Cambridge.

"Currently, the lamp-post includes infra-red sensors that provide a method of counting vehicles for traffic monitoring that is superior to inductive loops in the road or locating sensors at the roadside. A widely deployed network of intelligent lamp-posts could deliver real-time, freely available data for traffic control and journey planning while also providing long-term data to help urban planners make informed future policy decisions."
