The new Government for the State of Victoria in Australia is attempting to reverse basic initiatives pursuing the integration of land use and transport, brought on by NIMBY influences.
The new Liberal Government of Victoria, which recently won the state election this past November, has vowed to implement a platform of less growth in established areas and encouraged growth in greenfield sites through the further expansion of the urban growth boundary.
Supported by both residents in established areas who are discouraged by higher-density growth and the development industry, the new Planning Minister, Matthew Guy, has already removed a key policy which sought to establish high-density growth along existing transport corridors without consultation or any supporting research.
This approach by the new State Government has drawn condemnation from the Australian Federal Government, which has recently released a document highlighting the need to stop urban sprawl and encourage density near established infrastructure, and may result in potential problems regarding Federal funding going to the State.
