As CNU 19 convenes in Madison, Wisconsin, Reporter Mike Ivey says that New Urbanism's brand of smaller homes and denser lifestyle may be finally finding its niche.
Ivey observes that "...while New Urbanism has been all the rage in planning and architectural circles since the 1980s, American homebuyers weren't such an easy sell."
But prominent New Urbanists Peter Calthorpe and Andres Duany say the tide is turning:
"Reached by phone at Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company, his office in Miami, Duany predicts the challenges of expensive energy, concern over climate change and an unsustainable national debt will demand development based around self-sufficiency, urban agriculture and local decision-making. But he cautions that proponents should be flexible."
