Jennifer Hattam profiles a DIY project of artist Anton Polsky, who set out to create a better bike map for the city of Moscow.
On the verge of what has been described as potential "transportation collapse", Moscow authorities have promised to make the city more bicycle friendly. Over the next 5 years, cyclists can expect to see 25 kilometers of new bike routes. However, many fear it won't be enough for a city of its size.
Artist, cyclist and activist, Anton Polsky, took it upon himself to illustrate his own map of bike routes through the city. Taking it a step further, he posted a map on his website and encouraged cyclists to print copies, mark their preferred routes, and then deposit the maps at designated galleries. The collaborative mapping effort includes cycling amenities such as bike shops, parking and landmarks, as well as bike hazards such as particularly dangerous intersections.
Improving cycling conditions may be an important step in alleviating Moscow's mobility challenges. Hattam points out that "Polsky's project could give the government initiative a good head start."
