The new law is for any bike rider who has ever paused to wonder if drivers on the road even understand the meaning of the traditional right turn hand signal.
Michigan Governor Rick Snyder signed into law legislation that makes it easier for bikers to signal a right turn—i.e., by extending their right arm horizontally rather than making an L shaped signal with their left arm. In effect, the new right turn signal is the mirror image of the left turn signal.
Governor Snyder calls the new law “common sense.” It replaces a 1949 law written for a time when cars lacked indicator lights and motorists had to make turn signals with their arms.
