Revealed: A Splashy New Master Plan for Former Civic Arena Site in Pittsburgh

One of the country's most beautiful cities could get a dramatic new development project, calling on the design talents of Bjarke Ingels Group.

Philip Stevens reports on a new master plan, designed by starchitect firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) along with landscape architecture firm West 8, for a 28-acre site in the Lower Hill district of Pittsburgh.

The project start date is estimated for 2016, and the final price tag is expected to ring up to $500 million. The master plan includes1,200 residential units and over 1 million square feet of retail and commerce space.

According to Stevens, "the pittsburgh penguins and mccormack baron salazar hired BIG to design the residences and public spaces at the 28-acre lower hill district of pittsburgh earlier this year. building upon the city’s efforts from the past decade, the proposal redevelops the public space around the former civic arena — including a public space across from consol energy center — and connects the property to downtown, uptown and the rest of the hill district."
