BRT in High Gear in Jacksonville

A car-dependent city is undertaking one of the most ambitious build-outs of bus rapid transit found anywhere in the United States.

Earlier in December, Jacksonville, Florida opened the first segment of the First Coast Flyer bus rapid transit system, with service from runs from the Rosa Parks Transit Station near Jacksonville's downtown north to Interstate-295.

According to a post by Todd Solomon on the U.S. Department of Transportation website, the First Coast Flyer has barely opened for service "when the FTA added $19.1 million in Small Starts funding for the Flyer’s third phase, the Southeast Corridor."

Solomon's post, in addition to the First Coast Flyer website, has more on the continued build out of the system, which will occur in five phases.
