Tampa Approves Big Riverfront Park Renovation

The Tampa City Council approved a big, ambitious park proposal for 23 neglected acres along the Hillsborough River.

Richard Danielson reports: "The council voted 6-1 on Thursday to spend $35.5 million to remake Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park, 23 all-but-forgotten acres just across the Hillsborough River from the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts."

According to Danielson, the park joins several predecessor urban park projects near the Tampa riverfront in the past seven years: Curtis Hixon Waterfront, Perry Harvey Sr,. and Water Works. Danielson also describes the project as perhaps the most significant legacy for Mayor Bob Buckhorn.
