New service, funded by the Department of Transportation, hopes to curb bike theft with bike valet in Union Square, Time Square and Ridgewood.

New York is experimenting with valet bike parking in some of its most dense locations. "The Department of Transportation will install three, staffed bicycle valet parking structures near transit hubs to allow for commuters to pay a “nominal fee” for secure, on-the-street parking," Vincent Barone reports for AM New York.
These bike valets will use small shelters that can hold only 29 bikes, they will be open from 7 to 7 at a minimum. Officials hope that the program, which is similar to one already in place in Washington D.C., will be a successful and lead to an expansion. Asking riders in the area, Barone found that the main concern they shared was the cost and the possibility of returning to a closed station.
