Market in Portland Creates Bicycle Bridge Options

As discussed by Michael Andersen of Bike Portland, a new indoor food market is replacing an under-utilized parking lot in the Morrison Bridge cloverfleaf on-ramps. Portland is pushing for a space like Vancouver's Granville Island or Copenhagen's Torvehallerne.

With this redesign opportunity, at open houses the public will be able to comment on a proposal to also modify the bike landings from the bridge, which currently are awkward and counter bicyclist behavior. As it is, the landings cause a three-block detour, leading many bikers to dangerously cycle on the wrong side of the road.

"My thinking was just make sure we’re at the table at the very beginning," local bike advocate Andrew Holtz shared with Andersen. "It sounds like they are eager for input, so I’m hopeful that they will take the comments that people have and really work them into the plan."
